On 15 July 2026, NRW accepted a Marine Licence application from Gwynedd Council for works associated with improvements to coastal defences located in Barmouth, North Wales. The works include refurbishment of existing sheet piles, the deposit of rock armour at beach level, refurbishment of a culverted outfall and reinstatement of a non-return valve, and the removal of existing timber groynes.
Outside the scope of this Marine Licence application there are further works associated with the scheme landward of Mean High Water Springs, and not in the Marine Licensable area. Please be aware that in addition to the Marine Licence application, Gwynedd Council has submitted an application for planning permission which is currently being considered by Cyngor Gwynedd Local Planning Authority. Further information on the application for planning permission can be found on the Local Authority’s website.
The Marine Licence application determination for the seaward aspects of the scheme will be running in parallel to that of the planning permission. Although there are areas of overlap, both have a separate process. We direct you to the Marine Licence application form which highlights the works within this application.
Please find below the Marine Licence Application form, Document List and Technical Note.
All documents submitted as part of the application can be seen on our public register.
