Overview

Natural Resources Wales is responsible for the sustainable management of the publicly owned woodlands and forests of Wales. They are managed for the benefit and well-being of the people who visit them and depend on them for their livelihood. This responsibility includes improving their biodiversity and long-term resilience to climate change so that future generations will also be able to enjoy the benefits they provide. Every ten years Natural Resources Wales reviews the long-term management plans for each forest area. These are compiled in a new Forest Resource Plan.

Dyfi forest is an extensive forest of over 5000 Hectares, which lies to the north of the main Dyfi river at the southern end of Snowdonia National Park.  It includes forest areas around the settlements of Pantperthog, Ceinws, Corris, Abellefenni in the west and Aberangell and Dinas Mawddwy in the east. It is mainly visited and used for walking, mountain biking and horse riding with a number of picnic sites and informal access points:

Summary of the main changes that will occur in the forest:

  • More thinning management of conifers both in the short and long-term
  • Clear felling of larch and other conifers in the next ten years
  • More broadleaves and less conifers with more restored Ancient Woodland and riparian habitats
