Announcement of intention not to prepare an environmental statement: Esgair Mwyn Metal Mine - Spoil Heap Erosion Prevention Works

Closes 30 Sep 2025

Opened 1 Sep 2025

Overview

Regulation 12B of the Environmental Impact Assessment (Land Drainage Improvement Works) SI1999/1783 as amended

Esgair Mwyn Metal Mine - Spoil Heap Erosion Prevention Works

Natural Resources Wales hereby gives notice of its intention to carry out improvement works to a tributary of the Nant y Garw at the abandoned Esgair Mwyn Lead Mine (National Grid Reference: SN7541069320), located approximately 2 km northeast of Ffair-Rhos.

The proposed works will involve the following:

The creation of natural flood management features designed to prevent scour, erosion and the mobilisation of mine wastes. These features will consist of hurdles made from bundled and bound vegetation brash, fixed to ground with wooden stakes.

The improvements will be confined solely to the spoil heaps. All work will be carried out manually, with vehicular access limited to farm tracks.

The existing landforms and historic features of the mining spoil heaps will be preserved. The works will not impact any known areas containing rare lichens or bryophytes associated with the mine waste.

Given the small scale and nature of the works and absence of sensitive ecological sites present within the working area, Natural Resources Wales has concluded that the proposed improvement works are not likely to have significant environmental effects. Therefore, it does not intend to prepare an Environmental Statement in respect of them.

Although an environmental statement is not being produced, the scheme design has considered environmental factors associated with the site and an Environmental Action Plan (EAP) has been prepared for use during delivery of the project.

The EAP and project design information can be requested from the contact below.
