Overview

We are continuing our work to find long-term ways to reduce the risk of flooding in the communities of Porthmadog and Tremadog.

Like all coastal communities, the area is facing a future of rising sea levels, more frequent storms and wetter weather, due to climate change.

This will put increased pressure on flood defences and increase the risk of flooding if we don’t take action.

Managing the risk of flooding for people and homes into the future in a changing climate is a significant challenge given the low-lying area and the age of the current defences.

We will update this page with new information as the project moves forward and you can view previous materials at the bottom of this page.

Our work

The project builds on previous projects and studies and will involve assessing a range of long-term options to reduce the risk of river and sea flooding to the local community.

We will take into account a range of factors for the options we consider such as sustainability, viability, and affordability.

It also builds on views from the community on possible project options to reduce flood risk. Those views, either from the letter drop in 2021 or during drop-in events in 2023, are currently being used as part of our evidence to investigate a developing long list of options and propose a short list.

We are committed to working with nature and exploring opportunities to create new habitats and improve the biodiversity in the area.

There may be opportunities to regenerate the existing flood defences and associated public spaces, providing wider benefits for the local community. We want to work together to find solutions that can offer a sustainable future for Porthmadog.

What next

We anticipate sharing the assessment of the long list of options and the proposed short list with the community in Autumn 2025.

We will produce a series of materials in digital and print format and there will also be feedback forms so you can share your views.

We will also be arranging a series of in-person events so that you can come and speak to members of the project team.

What we’re doing in the meantime

The flood risk is complex and with studies and assessment of the long list ongoing, it is important that we get this right.  Over the summer, we may need to perform additional localised surveys and walkovers to help in our appraisal.
