Dylife Mine Project - Remediation Works
Overview
ANNOUNCEMENT OF INTENTION NOT TO PREPARE AN ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT under Regulation 5 (1) of the Environmental Impact Assessment (Land Drainage Improvement Works) Regulations 1999 (Amendment) 2017
Notice is hereby given that Wales Metal Mines Programme, a partnership between Natural Resources Wales and the Mining Remediation Authority, intends to remediate Dylife Mine to control pollution and reduce the metal loading in the Afon Twymyn caused by surface water runoff of the historical Dylife lead and copper mines, in the Afon Twymyn and Nant Dropyns catchments, Dylife, Powys (OSGR SN 86153 94001).
The proposed improvements are located at Dylife Mine and will involve:
Phase 1: Installation of road drainage comprising road gullies and carrier drains, adjacent to the public road with outfalls into the Afon Twymyn and its tributaries.
Phase 2: Lining of the Nant Dropyns, comprising excavation of the river bed and lining with impermeable barrier followed by reinstatement of the river bed material. Capping of the dressing floor with an impermeable barrier and laying of surface water intercepting drainage.
Phase 3: Lining of the Afon Twymyn. Installation of a groundwater cut-off barrier on the south side of the road. Installation of scour protection work on the east of Hirnant Tips.
Phase 4: Regrading and stabilising the slopes of the tips, and constructing tip drainage.
Natural Resources Wales has undertaken an environmental assessment of the proposals and considers that the improvement works are not likely to have significant effects on the environment and therefore does not intend to prepare an Environmental Statement in respect of Schedule 2 of the Environmental Impact Assessment (Land Drainage Improvement Works) Regulations 1999 (Amendment) 2017.
The assessment of potential environmental effects, the significance and any suggested mitigation/ controls to make certain that there are no adverse effects on the environment are presented as a Project Environmental Report including an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Screening and is available from the Project Manager via the contact details below.
Although an Environmental Statement is not proposed, the scheme design has considered environmental factors associated with the site and an Environmental Action Plan (EAP) has been prepared for use during the project. The EAP and scheme design information can be obtained from the contact below.
Any person wishing to make representation in relation to the likely environmental effects of the proposed improvement works should do so, in writing, to the address specified below, by 25 February 2026.
