Announcement of intention not to prepare an environmental statement - Parc Mine, Gwydir Forest

Overview

ANNOUNCEMENT OF INTENTION NOT TO PREPARE AN ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT

Regulation 12B of the Environmental Impact Assessment (Land Drainage Improvement Works) SI1999/1783 as amended

Natural Resources Wales gives notice that it proposes to carry out channel restoration works on the Nant Gwydyr in the Gwydir Forest, Snowdonia National Park (NGR: SH787602). The proposed works will reinstate the Nant Gwydyr following a slope failure and landslide in January 2025. The works will involve the clear fell of young conifer trees in order to establish an access track, followed by channel restoration work and strengthening work around the existing weir structure of Level No. 4 Adit at Parc Mine.

The proposed works will occupy a total area of 1,500 m2 on the site of Parc Mine. Heneb have been consulted with during early engagement of this work. As part of the works early engagement, Heneb have been consulted to determine if any archaeological sensitives are present around the site. They determined that an archaeological watching brief is not necessary due to the low impacts of the work to surrounding non-designated features. The proposed work is located on the Gwydyr Forest Mines SAC and SSSI. A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal has been undertaken and Calaminarian grassland and bat surveys completed. Measures to avoid the potential impacts to these features have been designed into the project. A Habitats Regulations Assessment and SSSI assent will be undertaken to allow the works to continue.

Natural Resources Wales considers that the improvement works are not likely to have significant effects on the environment and does not intend to prepare an environmental statement in respect of them. Although an environmental statement is not proposed, the scheme design has considered environmental factors associated with the site and an Environmental Action Plan (EAP) has been prepared for use during the project.

The EAP and scheme design information can be obtained from the contact below.

Any person wishing to make representations in relation to the likely environmental effects of the proposed improvement works should do so, in writing, to the address specified below, by 19 March 2026.
