Tell us your thoughts about the community flood plan template

Thank you to everyone who completed our flood plan survey. We received 28 responses and we’d like to share a short summary of the responses with the volunteer network.

Summary

We asked whether you thought a template is a useful starting point for a community to create a flood plan. 89% responses agreed or strongly agreed. We therefore feel confident that a template is an effective way to help communities starting to develop a flood plan.

We asked what you would like to see on a community flood plan template and there were a range of suggestions. Here are the themes of the responses:The importance of contact details is clear, and the wide range of things you may want to consider in a community flood plan. We will use this information to prioritise information on a template.

We asked whether as a community you plan for any other hazards:

There was a mixture of responses, with some groups already planning for wider emergencies, and others would like to do this in the future. We will share information and advice about doing so, including the community resilience resources and tools available on GOV.UK.

We asked whether people kept a paper and or electronic copy of their plan, and there was a mixture of responses:

This feedback will help us to update the template and supporting resources to make sure they are designed to be both used both printed and online. From your feedback, we recognise that we need to improve our online information about community flood plans and templates on our website. We will begin work to understand what changes are possible, and the time frame in which it can be done and identify a range of ways we can do this.  

We suggested different types of supporting resources, and received a good indication of what you would find helpful:

We’d like to discuss these potential resources in more detail with those who have generously agreed to consider further drafts, for example, other topics that could be useful for a ‘how to guide’.

Some other important points and potential areas of support were raised:

• It could be helpful if we could support recruiting fellow volunteers and communicating details of the plan to the rest of your community. Although some of the suggested resources could help in some way towards that, we will also think about how we can better support your needs with this, bearing in mind the barriers that you identified.
• Testing a plan is a way that some groups are already helping to prepare and develop their plans and they feel that it links to having a good understanding of their own role and the actions that should be taken. We are going to think about whether there is further advice we can give, to help enable communities to test their plans further, for example, providing generic scenarios or advice on how to test plans.
• The importance of having a strong lead in the community.
• We will also try to make it clear that our templates or resources are an available resource, but not the only way, and could act as a starting point or reminder.

Next steps

We will soon be in touch with those who confirmed that they’d be willing to review drafts of an updated flood plan template and supporting resources.

Following your input, we will start updating the template and prioritising and creating supporting resources.
